Something to make your mind boggle

According to dictionary.com "A slash represents 'or' or 'and/or' in alternatives such as: yours/mine."

How can "/" represent "and/or"? What does the "/" in "and/or" stand for? So if you don't want to use abbreviations, would you have to say "and and/or or"? You would still have a slash! I can only come to one conclusion to this, and that is there is no way possible to put into words the definition of "/".
